Creating Families Through Love, Support, and a Little Bit of Courage

For April, surrogacy has always felt especially meaningful. As an IVF baby herself, she has a unique understanding of the many ways families can be created. After becoming a mom and experiencing that love firsthand, she knew she wanted to help someone else experience it too.

Throughout her journey, April found joy in sharing each milestone with her intended parents, from ultrasound pictures and pregnancy updates to feeling the baby move. With the support of her family, friends, and the Kindred team, she learned just how meaningful it can be to help create a family.

What was the moment you knew surrogacy was the right path for you?

I think the moment I knew surrogacy was right for me was when I realized I had the ability to give someone something they could not give themselves. I was actually an IVF baby myself, so fertility and the different ways families are created have always felt especially meaningful to me.

After becoming a mom and experiencing that kind of love firsthand, the thought of being able to help someone else felt incredibly special.

How did your family or close friends react when you shared your decision to become a surrogate?

My family and close friends were very supportive when I shared my decision to become a surrogate. I am so thankful for those who were in my corner during surrogacy.

What was your favorite part of the matching process with the intended parents?

I enjoyed getting to know the intended parents. Once we matched, it started to feel so real, and I was excited to help them grow their family.

Can you share a memorable moment from your pregnancy that made you smile or feel connected to the baby or parents?

The most memorable moments during pregnancy were giving ultrasound pictures, sharing updates on movements, and celebrating each milestone. Seeing their excitement made everything I was going through worth it.

What was the biggest challenge you faced during the surrogacy journey, and how did Kindred support you through it?

I think the biggest challenge for me was navigating some of the ups and downs that came with pregnancy, hormones, and the shots. Kindred was always there whenever I had questions, concerns, or needed reassurance. I never felt alone during the process.

How did you feel when you met the intended parents for the first time after delivery?

I actually met the intended mother a little before delivery. She was so kind. We went for a nail day and lunch, and it already felt like she was a family member. We connected right away.

What surprised you most about the surrogacy experience?

I went into it knowing I was going to help a family, but I did not realize how proud of myself I would be for being able to experience this.

How has being a surrogate changed the way you view family or community?

There are so many ways a family can be created. Family is not just about biology. It is about love, support, and the people who come together to make something possible.

This also showed me how important community is. Having Kindred and my family supporting my journey was very meaningful to me and something I will always be grateful for.

What role did Kindred’s team play in making your journey feel personal or unique?

Just being able to text at any time and getting a response back felt very personal. I think I called Ursila at 1 a.m. one morning because I was nervous about labor!

Being able to chat with other surrogates and make friends through Kindred was also such a special feeling. Having that community made the journey even more meaningful.

If you could go back and talk to yourself before starting this journey, what would you say?

I would tell myself, “You’ve got this. You are going to help create the cutest baby possible.”

What’s a small detail from your journey that you’ll always remember?

I will always remember that the intended parents let me name the baby and how honored I felt. It was such a special gesture and something I will always hold close to my heart.

How did you celebrate or mark the end of your surrogacy journey?

Seeing the intended parents with their baby was honestly the greatest celebration. It was such an emotional, full circle moment knowing that the journey we had worked toward ended with their baby in their arms.

It is a chapter of my life I will always hold close to my heart.
